UPDATE: Today's Healthy Kitchen Hack is an updated post that I first posted for a Recipe ReDux theme of "DIY Kitchen Staples" and at the time, my 8-year-old was obsessed with ketchup. She's toned down her love for it but I've been making these ever since I discovered you can make homemade ketchup in 10 minutes!

What are your feelings on ketchup?

Like almost every kid I know, my daughter LOVES it. On turkey burgers, french fries, chicken, scrambled eggs and even on ham or turkey hoagies (<--gah.)

As for me - besides using it on the occasional hamburger or hot dog (sometimes I add mustard too - I'm crazy like that) - I can pretty much take it or leave it.

That was until I whipped up a batch of Honey Cinnamon Ketchup and Smoked Sriracha Ketchup with ingredients I already had on hand.

In 10 minutes.

Holy smokes. Both versions were just exploding with flavor - sweet, acidic, smoky and spicy. I started dreaming up the ways I could use both of them because I couldn't get over how delicious homemade ketchup really is.

Now, admittedly, my 8 year old won't be giving up her beloved Heinz 57 for Honey Cinnamon Ketchup or Smoked Sriracha Ketchup.

But I think I'll be saying goodbye to store-bought ketchup for myself as these two versions are made from pantry staples, are low sodium and have less added sugar that store-bought versions.

Oh, did I mention how fantastic they taste?

Homemade Ketchup - Two Ways: Honey Cinnamon Ketchup & Smoked Sriracha Ketchup

  • Author: by Deanna Segrave-Daly, RD

Description

Make your own ketchup with pantry staples in 10 minutes! Honey Cinnamon Ketchup and Smoked Sriracha Ketchup would rock your next cookout.

Ingredients

Scale

For Honey Cinnamon Ketchup:

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ½ cup minced onion
  • 12 (ounce) can tomato paste
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup water

For Smoked Sriracha Ketchup:

  • 12 (ounce) can tomato paste
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, honey, maple syrup or molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce (use a little less or more depending on how spicy you like it)
  • ¼ teaspoon Spanish smoked paprika
  • ⅓ cup water

Instructions

For Honey Cinnamon Ketchup:

  1. In a small frying pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together onions, tomato paste, vinegar, honey, cinnamon and salt. Add in ¼ - ⅓ cup of water, mixing until you get ketchup to the consistency you like.
  3. If you prefer a smoother ketchup, use an immersion blender (or regular blender) to blend in the minced onions. Ketchup can be kept in a sealed container in the refrigerator for a few weeks.

For Smoked Sriracha Ketchup:

  1. In a large bowl, mix tomato paste, vinegar, brown sugar, Sriracha and smoked paprika. Add in ¼ - ⅓ cup of water, mixing until you get ketchup to the consistency you like. Ketchup can be kept in a sealed container in the refrigerator for a few weeks.

  1. I am obsessed with ketchup and a friend recently said to me, "I can't believe you like that crap compared to healthy you are" (but he doesn't even like ketchup!)...so I guess some habits die hard, but these recipes I'm going to have to try!!! Pinned!

    1. Hehe - well, we all have our favorite things right? Let me know if you try it!

  2. Honey cinnamon ketchup?? Omg must try!! I have to admit, I'm ketchup obsessed! I could live off the stuff as is, but am always open to new ketchup ideas 🙂

  3. Being Pittsburgh born and raised I have a hard time straying from Heinz Ketchup- but these flavors sound so intriguing! I've never made homemade ketchup before so I'm definitely going to have to try these out soon!

  4. I love this idea of homemade ketchup and controlling the added sugar! My boyfriend loves ketchup and recently bought a low sugar version to keep around, but next time I'm whipping this up - I'll probably enjoy it much more too!

    1. Let me know what he thinks! I'm totally digging your soda syrup 🙂

  5. This sounds amazing! The honey cinnamon version is right up my alley. I wonder how long it will last...

    1. It would last about 2 weeks in the fridge 🙂 Off to check off your waffles

  6. Ah! I've been wanting to make my own ketchup for forever. I don't know why I don't just DO IT! These recipes look delicious. This is happening this week. Level 2 will be making a fermented ketchup for me.

    1. ReDux always gives me the kick in the butt I need to "just make" those kinds of recipes. Fermented ketchup - I'm intrigued!

  7. So cool! I didn't know it could be so easy to make ketchup! I especially love that these use so much less sugar 🙂 Pinning for later.

  8. The smoked paprika snuck it's way in there 🙂 Sounds delicious!

    1. Ah, you know me well, Lauren - I am the queen of using smoked paprika in everything (even more so since Regan brought me the real deal back from Spain -it rocks!)

  9. I'll take a bottle of honey cinnamon ketchup for me and a bottle of smoked sriracha ketchup for the hubs 😉 these look great!

    1. I love it - his and hers bottles! Speaking of bottles, I totally busted my squeeze bottle during this photo shoot and need to order a few more.

  10. I'm probably the only person in the world that doesn't like ketchup. Total way to ruin fries! THIS, on the other hand, I think I could get into! I'll give it a try. Love the ketchup squiggle photo - stealing that idea 🙂

    1. Steal away 🙂 I lived in England for a bit when I was a teen and picked up the habit of dipping french fries in mayo back then. Which makes me totally shudder today!

  11. I love ketchup! Which I think officially takes me out of any "Serious Foodie RD" running 🙂 We have a bar near us that sells homemade hotdogs (and vegetarian hotdogs) and all kinds of homemade ketchup. They do a curry ketchup and a sriracha one and I cannot get enough. I swear I go there just for the ketchup- can't wait to try your versions!

    1. Oooh - the curry one sounds great and I predict that ketchup will be the next foodie condiment - ha!

  12. Must try this! Prefer the reduced-sugar ketchup varieties, as the original is so sweet. But know I'd love the homemade version even more. Now, which to make first?!

  13. I lean towards the sweet but this smoky ketchup sounds fantastic too!

  14. I am a ketchup purist but I would try the sriracha. I love me some ketchup! Great idea!

  15. Well If you've been on my blog recently, you know I'm all about homemade ketchup 😉

  16. I will be honest, I am not a ketchup person, way more of a mustard girl! That smoked sriracha ketchup, however, has definitely sparked my attention. I know my man will love it for sure, going to try it out!

  17. You totally rocked this month's challenge- what an awesome idea! I've never made my own ketchup, but now I'm dying to try. First up is definitely your Sriracha version! Surprisingly my 2 year old daughter isn't a fan of ketchup (yet), but my husband and I use it on our burgers, dogs, fries, and eggs (sometimes).

    1. Aww - thanks Sonali! My daughter wasn't at all into ketchup until about 4 or 5 years old and I don't even know how it came on but man, does she love it now. Hopefully her tastes will adapt to the flavored varieties at some point 🙂
