Rich Hot Cocoa Mix
Make your own Rich Hot Cocoa Mix for a frothy cup of hot chocolate, that's a fraction of the cost of store-bought cocoa mix.

It's hard to keep hot cocoa mix in the house these days. We're going through buckets of it. But the store-bought mix has more sugar and other ingredients that just aren't needed to make a rich, satisfying cup of cocoa.
My Homemade Rich Cocoa Mix contains only 3 ingredients: Baking cocoa, powdered sugar, and instant milk powder (NOT that non-dairy powdered coffee creamer stuff.)

Every year when the weather gets chilly, it takes me a while to get into the grove of making this hot cocoa mix. I originally published this recipe it in 2012. But now that I'm totally into making it again, I couldn't keep it buried on this blog. So here it is...updated and with a few new photos. (:

Most homemade hot cocoa mixes contain dry non-dairy creamer. Those creamers contain all sorts of fillers which are completely unnecessary for a cup of rich hot cocoa. Instead, I use instant non-fat dry milk, which is just pure milk, with the water removed. So kids (or anyone) get the goodness of protein- and calcium-rich real milk, antioxidants from the dark cocoa, and a little sweetness. [bctt tweet="Make your own rich and frothy: Hot Cocoa Mix. I've even been known to serve this healthy, milk-rich cocoa mix at breakfast, lunch, and dinner when we run out of milk, and it's just too cold to go to the store.
Happy sipping. Or, happy sipping for your kids' teachers - as it makes a great teacher's gift.

How do you drink your hot cocoa? With vanilla? Or, with something stronger?

If we ever get any snow here in the Northeast, I'll make a cup of your cocoa for my 5yo after building snowmen!
it's been "cold" here in FL the past few days.. and all i've wanted is some hot cocoa!
Homemade cocoa is definitely the way to go. This looks delicious and I love the bonus quinoa cookies too-yum! I have a very frugal mom as well 🙂
Powdered sugar is so smart! That would dissolve so much easier than granulated sugar.
Hi! I also grew up with powdered milk to save money. This is definitely a healthier option to what many people in France use: the Nestle Quik version. Thanks so much for sharing. The cookies look super scrumptious too!
What a great idea to use the mix in those crazy-good-looking cookies. Not sure which recipe I want to make first. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
I bet this mix would make great bread and scones as well as those great looking cookies. I love sneaking quinoa into recipes. I have got to try this. Thanks for posting it.
LOVE hot cocoa! Adding quinoa to cookies sounds like an amazing idea! Trying this soon! Thanks! 🙂
how perfectly simple. my son would have loved some after the snow we had on sunday... maybe i'll have to mix up a batch! thanks for sharing!
Thanks Gretchen. Of course, marshmallows are a nice addition for the kids. (:
I just pinned this recipe. I need something like this in my collection. Thanks!

this looks delicious, what a great idea for an instant takeaway mixture!
I am so psyched about this homemade hot cocoa mix because my boyfriend consumes hot chocolate at an alarming rate (I am not allowed to preach moderation with this issue 😉 ) So, this recipe will go over well! I can make a giant tub.
So simple, yet so delicious! BTW love the photo.
Thanks Nina. Let me know how you like it when you make it!
I can't believe I've never made homemade cocoa mix before. It's really a no brainer and I will do this in the coming weeks. Thanks!

WHat a smart idea. I never thought of making my own cocoa. I'll have to pass this on to my mom who actually has a hot cocoa machine!
Wow! A hot cocoa machine! So fun! Let me know how it turns out using the machine! (:
This is such a great homemade gift! And love that there's no JUNK in it! Can't wait to make this one!
What a great Christmas or hostess gift!
I've never tried making my own hot cocoa mix, but there's a first for everything! 😛 This sounds awesome!! <3
You won't believe how thick and rich the cocoa is when you make it. Powdered sugar contains cornstarch which naturally thickens the cooca. It's so yummy!
