I made my first fall crisp last week. Well, I should call it a “transitional” crisp as I threw a few end of the season plums along with my CSA apples.
That’s what I love about crisp and crumble recipes – you can tweak them for whatever seasonal fruit you may have on hand. And it’s easy to give them a healthy makeover too. For this, I followed Cooking Light’s recipe for Maple Walnut Apple Crisp and here are some tips & tricks to lighten up your crisp:
- Reduce the added sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup or honey by 2 – 3 tablespoons, especially when using ripe fruit.
- Replace some of the white flour in the topping with whole wheat flour, oats or cornmeal for a whole grain/fiber boost.
- Add nuts for some extra protein and crunch.
- Reduce the total amount of topping by about one-fourth.
And beyond the apple crisp, here are some delish apple recipes from us and other fab food bloggers to enjoy all autumn long:
And from our fellow bloggers….
Fresh Apple Pie Smoothie – EA @ The Spicy RD
Ahh, EA sure knows how to make an irresistible and healthy beverage.
Caramelized Apples – Chris @ The Café Sucré Farine
I was drooling over this photo – these would be delish over oatmeal, yogurt, whole grain pancakes or just eat them as is!
Pumpkin Crepes with Beer and Cinnamon Apples – Joanne @ Eats Well With Others
OK, this one may sound a bit indulgent but Joanne uses pretty wholesome ingredients in her recipes and doubles up on the fruit & veggies in this one!
Healthy Apple Pie Breakfast – Kylie @ Yeah…Imma Eat That
This gets most creative breakfast idea in my book right down to the visual.
Baked Peanut Butter Caramel Apples – Rhonda @ The Kitchen Witch
Skip the crust if you want to cut calories or enjoy as is (as I’m going to do when I make these.)
Caramelized Onion, Mushroom & Apple Tartlets – Karen @ Cinnamon Freud
An awesome appetizer for the upcoming holidays, though I may just throw all these toppings on some flatbread and call it lunch.
What do you put in your crisp recipes? Do you have a favorite or go-to apple recipe you love to make this time of year? Please share – we love to hear from you!

Apple love is in the air!! Great round-up of apple recipes, and thank so much for sharing my apple pie smoothie! Now that honey crisps are back in season, I've been making this a lot :-) So many yummy recipes, but I think your Spiced & Stacked Apple Bread looks especially amazing. Perhaps a GF experimentation should be undertaken... :-)
