Are you having a Super Bowl party this weekend? We are! So today’s Healthy Kitchen Hacks are shortcuts or easy ways to make popular game day snacks better. And, healthy too. But I’m pretty sure party guests won’t guess.
1) Really Crispy Baked Fries
Trish @Rhubarbarian
Baked fries can be blah and limp and a sad substitute for crispy, crunchy oil-fried fries. Not these. Talk about flavor. And crunch. They’re easy too. And since you’ll probably have a bottle or two of beer around this weekend, this is the perfect time to try out Trish’s trick for making the best baked fries I’ve tasted. Hint: The trick involves giving the potatoes a beer bath before baking.
2) Homemade Sour Cream and Onion Mix
Amber @Homemade Nutrition
I’m still thinking of uses for this tangy, Homemade Sour Cream and Onion Mix. On game day, it will be mixed into some low-fat sour cream + Greek yogurt to go along crunchy veggies. It will also be sprinkled on popcorn. And it will make my next batch of mashed potatoes delicious….and of course the baked fries too. Amber uses a ‘secret’ ingredient to get that tang – so don’t skip it – it’s easy to find in the baking section of regular grocery stores.
3) Quick Lime Salt Tortilla Chips
I first made these Lime Salt Tortilla Chips back in 2012 – when my husband and I were buying too many bags of the addictive Hint of Lime Tostitos. This easy homemade version is even better. While the packaged versions is finger-lickin’-good – they do have that ‘artificial’ flavor. My recipe is just 4 simple ingredients: Corn tortillas, a little oil, lime peel/zest and salt.Secret ingredient to make Baked Fries crispy + more Super Bowl Snack Hacks #HealthyKitchenHacks @TspCurry Click To Tweet
4) Slow Cooker Baked Sweet Potatoes
Lindsay @The Lean Green Bean
Hello, Super Bowl sweet potato bar with lots of toppings: These set-it-and-forget it Slow Cooker Loaded Sweet Potatoes are done in less than 3 hours on HIGH (or 4 hours on LOW as is in Lindsay’s recipes.) And my kids will have something they love – besides chips at the party – that’s (Shhh!) also healthy.
5) Never Clean Your Cup Holder Again
Whitney @ The New Stepford
If you live in the Eastern or Central time zones, you’ll definitely need this hack the morning after Super Bowl…when you make your necessary cup of coffee. And if you’re like me and spill (at least a few dribbles) of coffee into your car’s cup holder nearly every time I’m in the car, fret no longer. Just pop a paper muffin cup in your cup holder to keep from cleaning it – ever. (Of course, 1 muffin cup won’t erase an entire travel cup spill!) But coffee drips and granola bar crumbs are no longer a problem – just crumple the crumb-filled muffin cup and toss.

The tortilla chips are so easy. We always have corn tortillas in the fridge for quick meals - usually 'toad in a whole' - where you cut out a hole in the tortilla and put and cook an egg in it. But the Lime Salt Chips are great for a quick after school snack with salsa. (: Thanks Melanie!

You will love the fries Steph! I've never gotten baked fries to turn out so crispy: I think it has something to do with the extra starch the beers add - that helps the browning/crisping process!
