Ginger Pear Applesauce

Ginger Pear Applesauce

Ginger Pear Applesauce

Two of my biggest recipe influencers of late: what I’m getting in my CSA box and ideas from my favorite food bloggers while connecting via social media outlets. Case in point: Here The Spicy RD recounts a twitter conversation we had last month over homemade appleasauce. We made our pear versions around the same time (but EA is way more on the ball than me considering I’m just getting around to posting now.)

I get my CSA share from Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative – they support dozens of local Lancaster County farms so you get a selection from several different farmers every week in your goodie box. They also offer a Community Medicine Share (CMS), which includes fresh herbs, homemade lotions, tonics and other medicinals – how cool is that?? Anyway, this particular week, we regular half-share holders benefited from the extra ginger root that was in the CMS shares. I’d never seen true fresh ginger, as in white/green/purple skin vs. brown and dried skin.

As you can imagine, it smelled divine.

Since I had some apples and pears looking a little sad, I figured it was time for applesauce. And why not throw in some chopped pieces of that fresh ginger? End result: a pear applesauce with a big gingery kick that tasted divine, too.

Yum! I loved the ginger in there. Not so much the apple peel. It just doesn't grind up small enough for me. Maybe I'll partially peel the apples next time so I still get some of the benefits from the peel.
