Watermelon Margaritas

(UPDATE: Links to the other watermelon cocktails: Watermelon Mojitos and Watermelon Ginger Beers.)

It’s no surprise that my family is getting our watermelon fix right now during the dog days of summer. At one point, there was more watermelon slices than we could eat (hard to image) so I threw some in the blender (without the rind of course) then strained and mixed in some fresh lime juice.

This watermelon lime juice is currently my daughter’s favorite drink – I think half the reason is because she loves to use our wooden reamer to squeeze out the limes. I usually add some seltzer to cut the sweetness and add some bubbles.

The past couple weekends, we’ve had people over for cookouts so the watermelon juice was stepped up to the next level: happy hour. I’ve come up with three simple watermelon libations that I’ve been making quite regularly (hey, happy hour can last all week long in the summer as far as I’m concerned.) I’ll be sharing all of them on the blog and first up:

Watermelon Margaritas.

These couldn’t be simpler. It’s the classic margarita recipe with some watermelon juice simply add to the mix. And by mix, I mean the traditional combination of tequila, Triple Sec (or Cointreau) and lime juice. Don’t bother with those store bought margarita mixes that contain crappy ingredients and taste fake. It’s so much easier and tastier to make it yourself.

Watermelon Margaritas

Makes 1 drink

  • 1 cup watermelon juice (watermelon pureed and strained)
  • Juice from 1/2 lime
  • 1 ounce silver tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Triple Sec
  • 5 ice cubes
  • Salt, optional

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Shake until thoroughly mixed. Pour into a margarita glass.

I found that 1 large watermelon yields about 10 1/2 cups of strained juice.

To salt the rim of your glass, rub a half of a lime around the entire rim. Pour salt onto a plate and place glass upside down onto the salt and turn until the entire rim is covered.

Since I’m a sweet & salty lover, I like to serve these with a salted rim but that of course is optional. I’ve also made this with watermelon juice ice cubes and whipped up the whole thing in the blender for a fruity twist on a frozen margarita.

Do you like to juice fresh fruit? Do you have a favorite summer cocktail? Would love to hear about what you drinking this summer (both alcoholic and non-acoholic!)

  3. I made a non alcoholic drink with some lime flavored sparkling water (seltzer, tonic water, club soda also work) poured over cotton candy. Simple, slightly sweet and a great way to use up that bag of cotton candy you got conned into buying at the fair.

This morning I put some watermelon in the blender with a scoop of vanilla protein powder for breakfast. I think I will blend and strain the rest I have in the fridge since I have two more ripe ones ready for picking outside.
